Sleep & Energy Medicine

Whether you’re having a hard time falling asleep or you’re waking up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, the reasons can be uncovered during an Energy Medicine session.

A physician I know once told me that aside from the primary reason patients schedule visits, poor sleep and stress are the second and third reasons. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 Americans rely on sleep aids. Sleep can be compromised by a number of things, but stress and hormones are typical culprits.

Whether you’re having a hard time falling asleep or you’re waking up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, the reasons can be uncovered during an Energy Medicine session.

One of the main systems we work with in Energy Medicine is the Meridians. Meridians are energetic pathways that run through the body and govern our organs. Acupuncturists use points along the Meridians to place their needles, and Energy Medicine practitioners work with them through holding, tapping or by pressing the points.

Each Meridian has a two hour ‘high tide’ and ‘low tide’ during the course of a 24-hour day when the organ it governs is in its most active state. Looking at the time frames in which your sleep disturbances occur gives us clues where balancing may be needed. Sometimes it's not the Meridian itself, but rather different energy systems or parts of the body that correlate with that Meridian.

If sleep disturbances are being caused or exacerbated by hormonal imbalances, we can muscle test to determine what kind of hormone balancing is needed. There is rarely a single cause of sleep issues, so addressing as many root causes as possible will provide the most amount of relief.

I like to look at wellness from many different angles and while I’m not an expert on circadian rhythms, I do know that working with mine drastically improved my sleep quality. When our cortisol/leptin/melatonin production is off kilter, it sends mixed signals to the body on when it should energize or slow down.

In addition to eating appropriately for leptin sensitivity, triggering cortisol to rise and melatonin production to begin at appropriate times is paramount. Going outside for at least 10 minutes when you first wake up signals the body to start making cortisol. It is also helpful to get outside frequently throughout the day without sunglasses or sunscreen. Then an evening walk or sunset gazing will signal your body to switch from cortisol to melatonin production.

Getting in bed by 10:30 pm is also helpful. Triple Warmer is a Meridian whose high tide is 9:00-11:00 pm. Triple Warmer governs our stress response, and if we stay awake past its high tide window it goes on high alert. Going to bed during its window reassures the body that it’s safe to relax and go to sleep.

In addition to uncovering the energetic causes of sleep disturbances, a session with me always includes exercises and simple things you can do on your own to encourage the body and mind to settle. It can take some time to unweave poor sleep patterns, but discovering the root causes and being supported with a holistic plan can provide tremendous and immediate relief.

My Bridge to the Afterlife

For eight years leading up to this, I had immersed myself in the world of natural remedies and food as medicine. I had listened to numerous alternative health practitioners talk about healing cancer with natural methods and always said if it happened to me, I would take the road less traveled.

My Dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer in the spring of 2020 while the world was in the midst of covid lockdowns. I live in Virginia, but my entire family is in Oklahoma. My Dad was terrified I would get covid and give it to him and my family if I traveled there, so I relied on video chats to check in on him.

For eight years leading up to this, I had immersed myself in the world of natural remedies and food as medicine. I had listened to numerous alternative health practitioners talk about healing cancer with natural methods and always said if it happened to me, I would take the road less traveled.

Although my Dad loved plants and the natural world so much, when it came to his cancer treatment he was all-in on the conventional path. He did everything his oncologist recommended. By winter of 2020, he had completed his treatments and was back to his usual tricks - up on roofs and underneath cars making repairs, tending to his garden, photographing his family and tooling around with his plethora of hobbies.

This was around the time the v a c c i n e s were being rolled out and he was first in line. Shortly after he received it, the cancer resurfaced with a vengeance and it wasn’t long before he was back in the hospital and out of treatment options.

I found a doctor near my parents that offered alternative cancer therapies, but by the time my Dad agreed to try them he was too sick to benefit from them. He ended up passing away a week before Father’s Day of 2021.

I stayed in Oklahoma for a few weeks after his death to be with my Mom and sisters. Before my Dad’s diagnosis I was already angry and frustrated with the medical community, but observing the dysfunction and corruption that is intertwined with conventional cancer treatment put all those feelings into overdrive. I felt like I had to do something to prevent this from hurting anyone else I loved.

During my stay I booked a reading with a Medium my sister had met with on a few occasions. My goal was to find out what I should be doing with my professional life. I knew it wasn’t interior design and that I wanted to help people find healing, but I just couldn’t figure out my next steps.

I was skeptical, but needed something to take my mind off the pain my family and I were experiencing. What I encountered during my reading changed my life forever, as well as my family’s experience of losing my father and our relationship with the afterlife.

The Medium started out my reading with a meditation to ‘sync our energies.’ As she became quiet to start my reading, she informed me that a gentleman who had passed was asking to connect and asked if I was open to listening. Perplexed and wondering who this guy could be, I agreed.

She proceeded to tell me that the man had just passed and was apologizing for not staying around for Father’s Day. She was listening to him talk and interpreting into spoken words that I (a mere Muggle) could hear. He was saying my Mom’s name, Sharon, but it took her a while to get it, “Sh, Sh, Sherry? No, Sharon?” I was speechless.

He went on to tell her details about his time in the hospital, how he loved having his entire family there with him, and that he appreciated how we all wore charm necklaces with a train and a boot on them. During my lifetime I had only seen my Dad’s bare feet a few times. The rest of the time they were donned in work boots and he loved photographing locomotives, hence the two charms. He instructed me to have my Mom do certain things with his camera equipment (keep this camera, sell that one), and told us that he was fishing with my Grandpa, his father.

The personal detail she relayed to me was remarkable. No one could ever fabricate the information she revealed to me that day, and I left completely stunned and forever aware and in awe of how close our loved ones are to us after they leave their physical bodies.

Several days before my Dad passed, my husband and I were sitting with him at the hospital. He was still quite aware and conversational. I pointed out that the time was 11:11, and without acknowledging what I had said, he pointed toward the ceiling and told us that something up there looked very familiar. Soon after that, his pain became so unbearable that they upped his morphine and the hospice nurse met with us to prepare for the inevitable.

My Mom, sisters and I stayed at the hospital with my Dad each night, but my daughter and husband were staying at my parents’ house. The morning after my Dad saw ‘something familiar,’ my daughter saw HIM sitting on the sofa at their house and then again outside on the back porch - his two favorite spots. She told my husband and it perplexed us because my Dad was still alive, or at least his physical body was.

I will always wonder when my Dad’s spirit left his body, but my guess is it happened well before he actually died. And that he paid a visit to my daughter very intentionally because kids are more open to spirits than adults have been conditioned to be.

I know this may sound completely wackadoodle to the average reader, but I’m ok with that. I know that if and when you need this information, it will find you. I cannot imagine living life believing any other way. Having my Dad with me whenever I need him has made losing him so much more bearable, and in some ways we’re closer than we were when he was alive.

If you are going through the aftermath of a loss, I hope you can find comfort in knowing that you are fully supported, that your loved one is with you anytime you need them, and that the other side is nothing short of beautiful and magical.

How Energy Medicine Works

Rather than treating isolated symptoms, Energy Medicine provides clues to what areas of the body need to be freed and balanced. Balancing the body’s energies gives it the space it needs to perform optimally and for innate healing to occur.

Mental, physical and emotional stress can cause us to experience things like pain, neurological and mood disorders, addictions, and chronic and tough-to-treat ailments like digestive issues, hormonal imbalances and autoimmune conditions. Toxins in our indoor and outdoor environments add to the burden.

While we may not be thriving while experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, the body is simply prioritizing vital operations like heart, lung and kidney functions to keep us going until it has more support and energy to deal with the less critical functions like ideal digestion and hormone production.

In addition to stressors, the body stores our life experiences, including what we experienced in utero. Our minds may not remember a traumatic experience (perceived or otherwise), but our physical and energetic bodies always do.

One person’s perceived traumas may manifest as physical symptoms like an autoimmune condition, whereas another’s may manifest as an emotional imbalance. Regardless of the symptoms, the vitality of the energetic body is always at play.

When we rely solely on medical interventions to alleviate symptoms or to alter feelings and behaviors, we are merely suppressing sensations. This can encourage the underlying issues to root in deeper and proliferate because we are cutting off the body’s intricately designed feedback and restoration loops.

Energy Medicine is a gentle and obtainable way to alchemize ill health. It can be done in tandem with conventional treatments, and can be very supportive to the body before and after surgery or during chemotherapy and radiation.

Rather than treating isolated symptoms, it provides clues to what areas of the body need to be freed and balanced. Balancing the body’s energies gives it the space it needs to perform optimally and for innate healing to occur.

The more well-known energetic systems we work with in Energy Medicine are the meridians, chakras and aura. The meridians are energetic pathways which govern our organs. They run throughout the body and contain the points that acupuncturists work with.

Chakras are energy centers located along the centerline of the body which hold our experiences. They influence our hormones and the organs and glands within the areas of the body they are located.

The aura is the energy field that surrounds us and acts as a filter for energies coming in and going out. The aura plays a vital role in how we process everything we experience.

One of my favorite things about Energy Medicine is we don’t need to know what’s causing symptoms to work with them; the body will tell us through muscle testing! You and your unique body do the communicating. I simply hold space and translate the messages.

Oftentimes when we balance one area or system, others will naturally come into balance. It’s beautiful and the results are tangible as we move through the sessions together.
